Trans Rights

Trans people are among the most marginalized people in America. Trans women of color and youth are especially vulnerable in a society that does not legally or socially value the safety and dignity of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people. Here in New York we have a  variety of protections but have not yet passed the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) and have much more work to do to secure social support and cultural competency among service providers to ensure all trans people can live their lives to their fullest potential.

On February 23rd, 2017, Equality New York joined with over 40 organizations and elected officials to respond to the Trump-Pence administration’s attack of Trans students. The administration decided to rescind hard won and carefully compiled, research based guidance that supported the safety and dignity of TGNC students. As a community we rose up, and we are committed to building on that energy to pursue a world in which all LGBTQI people have justice and equality.

Take Action

Here are some actions you can take and organizations you can support. We hope you’ll join Equality New York so that, together, we can make sure New York is a safe and dignified place for all.

Imagine if every one of us did one of these! We might just change the world…

For non-trans folks:
1) Get to know the trans people in your life
2) Involved us in everything
3) Learn to use less binary language in EVERYTHING

GLSEN has been encouraging our young people, educators, and other folks to this Claim Your Rights page to flood OCR with complaints in a effort to highlight the need to put the guidance back in place. www.glsen.org/claimyourrights

4-5 nights a week NEAT hosts phone banks to fight for LGBTQ causes all over the country. You can call from home or from our call center in Times Square. Currently we are fighting to stop the anti-LGBTQ Supreme Court nominee. Sign up or get more info at http://www.theNEAT.org/volunteer
