Protecting Trans New Yorkers

Trans people are among the most marginalized people in America. Trans women of color and youth are especially vulnerable in a society that does not legally or socially value the safety and dignity of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people. Here in New York we have a variety of protections but have not yet passed the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) and have much more work to do to secure social support and cultural competency among service providers to ensure all trans people can live their lives to their fullest potential.

On February 23rd, 2017, Equality New York joined with over 40 organizations and elected officials to respond to the Trump-Pence administration’s attack of Trans students. The administration decided to rescind hard won and carefully compiled, research based guidance that supported the safety and dignity of TGNC students. As a community we rose up, and we are committed to building on that energy to pursue a world in which all LGBTQI people have justice and equality.
